So, how does a pitcher lose to a high minus team like Colorado going from thin air to heavy air? Well, you do exactly what Lucchesi did. He only used the bottom half of a typical pitch spray. What the heck does that mean? Well--look at a perfect pitch spray.
When a pitcher mixes Four-Seamers that are upward lifting; with Two-Seamers that are bending to the Right; Sliders that bend to the Left (from a right handed pitcher) and Curves that bend downward and to the left. But, throw only enough to keep the hitters off balance; it can be a thing of beauty.
Lucchesi used only the bottom half of the pitch spray against a team with a high minus VMI (-24.37 COL) meaning they would most likely be under the good 4-seamer, but they would be set up closer to the downward (or, bottom half of the pitch spray). Lucchesi threw 54 Sinkers and 17 Curves to the Rockies and they took advantage. The Rockies hit "Zero" 4-seamers off the Bull Pen. #howdtheywin #whydtheylose
