So, your team is trying hard to win the rubber game on Sunday, which is always difficult, and you are the pitcher the manager has called upon in the seventh inning. You watched from the bull-pen and saw your teammate (Marquez) get his four-seamer pounded for 5 hits off 27 strikes thrown at 97 mph for a whopping 18.52 hit per strike ratio—double the norm in MLB. You also watched as your other teammate (Rusin) kept the visiting Marlins off balance using no 4-seamers at all, for over 2 innings while your offense tried to keep up in your own home stadium.
The score is 6 to 5 in your inning (the 7th) so—what do you, and your manager, and your catcher decide to do? Well, of course you go out there and throw 12 four-seamers in a row at 96 mph, because………. well, you know…what Marquez’ four-seamer is not as good as mine? Oh, and besides that, Marquez is a Righty and I’m a Lefty and so I’ll just keep throwing it without any change whatsoever and see how it works out.
After all, the Rockies owner, Dick Monfort has assured us that we are getting weaker by the day as we play in thinner air than the rest of the league, so I don’t want to hurt myself. So, I’ll just keep throwing as fast as I can, and you know, maybe they’ll swing and miss. And, furthermore, when the media asked Bud Black which pitches he felt should work best in thinner air, he made a famous statement that “any pitch will work in Colorado, if it is a good pitch.” So, I’ll just try to locate my 12 in a row four-seamers against this Miami team who just came from good movement in San Francisco, to bad movement in Colorado, and you know, it will probably work out okay. And, our team doesn't worry about any plus or minus VMI from someone outside the organization.
What we have here in Colorado is an extremely professional baseball team. Congrats to the Marlins. Oh, and good job to Jake McGee, better luck next tiime. After all, next time you'll probably be in San Francisco where your fastball will be moving better. #howdtheywin #whydtheylose
